BUDDHIST MEDITATIONS

This series will offer a new meditation each day. Anam Thubten grew up in Tibet and at an early age began to practice in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Among his many teachers, his most formative guides were Lama Tsurlo, Khenpo Chopel, and Lama Garwang. He is the founder and spiritual advisor of Dharmata Foundation, teaching widely in the U.S. and abroad. He is also the author of various articles and books in both the Tibetan and English language. His books in English include The Magic of Awareness and No Self, No Problem. Through the essential wisdom of Buddhism and his personal experience on the spiritual path, Anam Thubten brings alive the time teachings and invites everyone to participate. For a full schedule of retreat opportunities with Anam Thubten and more information about Dharmata Foundation, please visit www.dharmata.org.

Insight Meditation, sometimes called vipassana, is a simple practice of opening to the truth of our lives by investigating the ever-changing flow of mind and body. A large part of this investigation involves relating to each moment of experience with acceptance, kindness and non-judgmental awareness. This helps us see through the patterns of conditioning in our minds and hearts that lead to a sense of separateness and dissatisfaction with life. During the 2011 Winter Feast for the Soul, we`ll use exercises in the Buddha`s Discourse on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness to help us investigate our minds, hearts and bodies and find the peace and joy with life that is possible. We`ll begin with the basics of how to meditate and will gradually move to more advanced practices. Each day we`ll have a 40 minute period of Insight Meditation practice, beginning with a 10-15 minute talk and followed by a period of silent meditation.

CHRISTIAN MEDITATIONS

This series will offer a new recording each day of the Feast. Carl McColman is an author, speaker, retreat leader and spiritual director. His blog, www.carlmccolman.com, celebrates the mystical and contemplative dimensions of both Christian and world spirituality. He is the author of over a dozen books, including The Big Book of Christian Mysticism and Answering the Contemplative Call. He studied Christian meditation at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation, and received additional training in the art of spiritual direction from the Institute for Pastoral Studies in Atlanta. He is a professed member of the Lay Cistercians of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit, a community of laypersons under the spiritual guidance of Trappist monks. His spirituality is devoted to the practice of contemplation within the context of marriage and family, outside of a traditional monastery. About this Course Contemplative spirituality is Christianitys best-kept secret. Monks, nuns and mystics have engaged in silent prayer and meditation for centuries, and their wisdom teachings have been preserved in contemplative writings like The Cloud of Unknowing or The Way of a Pilgrim. In this series of daily meditations, Carl draws on the wisdom of the mystics and relates it to the challenges of contemporary life. Let the Christian mystics guide you to a profound daily spiritual practice grounded in silence, meditation, and the unconditional love of God.

MEDITATIONS FOR CHILDREN

The “Stillness for Young Children” series is designed to give children (ages 7 and younger) the opportunity to find and practice stillness within them. All of the mindfulness practices offered in this series are anywhere from 4 – 8 minutes, keeping in mind the developmental needs of young children. This year we have a gathering of amazing teachers from around the world including the United States, Thailand, Australia, and Germany (one meditation will be in German!). Some of our past teachers have generously returned this year along with many new teachers - all who are providing heartfelt practices that are designed to help your child connect with peace and kindness while finding stillness within. We have the privilege of announcing that children will help to lead many of these practices, adding to the richness of this experience. Each day of this 40 day journey, a new offering will be released. This series is coordinated by April Ely, LCSW, a psychotherapist in Northern Arizona and founder of the Begin Within program – a mindfulness curriculum for school-aged children.

This series is designed for older children and teens, although younger children may enjoy the oferrings as well. There is no more important work for young people than to explore their inner world. And there is no more important work for us as their elders to support them in this exploration. This series will offer daily periods of mindfulness practice each day during the 40-day Winter Feast. This series will be led by a team of experienced mindfulness teachers, each of whom has chosen to step forward to work with older children and teens in their professional life. Now it is time for them to share that experience with you, our young people, teens, and perhaps even your families. Our guides for this series have selected themes such as Gratitude, Self-Awareness, Emotional Literacy, and more. You will see each topic listed as they are posted. Mindfulness practice is known to improve focus and concentration, enhance creativity and promote a sense of confidence and self esteem. We are grateful to these teachers, and to you our audience for making this Feast possible.

His artful teaching of meditation is appreciated by the many who attend his seminars, retreats, and intensives. Davids generosity and joyful spirit inspire seekers all over the world. Course description: Shahabuddin David : Universal Meditation Meditation is a means of connecting to the source of energy that allows us to both quiet the chattering of the mind and bring a more peaceful condition to our personality. Universal Meditation uses visualization, sound, and self-inquiry to bring about the natural state of mental and emotional relaxation. When this relaxation occurs an awakening of the deeper aspect of human consciousness naturally emerges. This deeper aspect has many names but only one primary vibration known as love, harmony and beauty, and can transform our being from a limited to an unlimited condition. These meditations are designed for meditators of all levels of experience.
